Learning music is an experience that can enhance someone’s life in a variety of ways. It’s a tangible way to connect with the music you love, but beyond that it can be used as an emotional outlet; as a form of therapy and stress relief, as well as a pathway to becoming a more disciplined person. Seeing someone play an instrument and pour themselves into a performance often inspires someone to want to join in and share the experience and the fun, and while the goal of music should always be fun, the difficulties we encounter as we grow in skill provide opportunities for both personal and musical growth.
My goal is for all students to have fun and develop their passion for music, but I am also a progress-oriented teacher. Playing musical instruments alone or with others is always a great experience, but the journey to the varying skill levels and plateaus require dedication and perseverance. This is something I find intrinsically valuable in all the arts – no matter your age and experience the pursuit of an art form always enhances your discipline and this transfers into other areas of your life. We all hit ceilings as we grow in skill, and the ability to keep pushing oneself to break through and improve beyond it is not only rewarding, but a character-building quality that can help you at any stage of your life.
I cater my lessons to an individuals stylistic/genre preference, and craft lesson plans that enable steady progression so that each song or technique accomplished leads you closer to your goal. Whether its simplifying a complex song to allow you to play alongside your favourite tracks early on, or patiently working through weeks of practice to hit a song above your playing level, I’ll work with you to find what style of learning suits your strengths and build you up from there.
Steve is nice and when you make a mistake he shows you how to do it right and he is patient. He is caring and if you need to take a break he lets you. It’s really fun when he teaches and is easier with the private lessons than with a whole group. I like that he comes to our house because it makes it more relaxed and comfortable.

Stephen is funny and he’s nice. He’s a good teacher because he teaches you what you want to learn. He is patient when I am struggling, but he always pushes me to learn new things. He encourages me to learn different instruments to help me get better at all of them.

Stephen has made an amazing impact on my daughter over the past year. She started as a total novice and her progress has been excellent! Stephen has a fantastic personality and really engages his students. He creates challenges while keeping things fun and instilling a sense of accomplishment. Stephen’s theoretical knowledge and stylistic versatility is impressive but what is more impressive is his ability to convey this to his students. Thanks again, you have put Sienna on a path that can last a lifetime.

"Stephen is a talented musician and teacher across multiple genres of guitar. I have been studying music theory, blues and classical guitar with him for approximately one year. As an adult beginner, I appreciate his patience and good humour. Stephen continually assesses my progress and provides positive feedback and kind, constructive criticism during my lessons. He pays careful attention to my playing and offers tips to help me practise at home more efficiently. He uses demonstrations, analogies and visuals to reinforce his lessons and clarify difficult material. Also, we have discussed techniques which I can apply for more dynamic recital performances or for just playing for friends. His encouragement has improved my confidence. Thank you Stephen, I'm looking forward to more fun lessons!"

”I have been taking piano lessons with Stephen for 2 years now. When I started I had prior knowledge of music and playing instruments including piano, but due to nerve damage in my hands I had been struggling to play any instrument. Stephen helped me regain my ability to play again, as well as my confidence in myself, he is patient, kind and understanding of people’s abilities and disabilities. He is open to listening to your struggles with playing and helping you find ways to deal with them. If it were not for him I’d still be staring at a dusty piano, longing to play. In two years I have progressed in playing the piano from a left hand not working at all to it finally having form and function. Stephen is not only a good teacher he is also a great student at life, as he learns from his students on how to deal with difficulties that individuals deal with and finds way to help them through it. I always look forward to my lessons with him even on my worse days. In short Stephen is the Best piano teacher ever!”

"I started with Steve as a beginner in guitar playing. Concepts that used to be completely alien to me, such as chords and how to properly read and interpret musical notes were explained by Steve in a way that I could easily understand them. Steve removed a great deal of the intimidation from learning something completely new. In one year I have progressed to the point where I can play simple tunes and I wish to progress and become more advanced. Steve possesses excellent insight into playing different types of musical genres to find something appealing to the student. His instruction is down to earth and I find him very friendly and entertaining. He is an excellent instructor and I highly recommend him."
